Let's ignore the quality of this photo and just applaud the fact that I took a selfie! One that I am in. And I documented how I did it, for YOU!! My light was very limited, but I wanted to document the process THAT day, so this is what we got. I'm happy.
I have the Canon 5D Mark 2 and it does NOT have wifi. This means that I can't use the fancy Canon App on my phone to take selfies!? I know. For shame. Well, after searching the internet and trying several workarounds, because, let's face it, I really need to see what the heck I look like before I take the shot, I have come up with a solution! Before I get started with the specifics, here is my jerry-rigged setup. With my laptop precariously on top of an upside down laundry basket in a chair. I wanted REALNESS people and sometimes an upside down laundry basket is what's there.
Now for the frustrating part!!
Here's what you will need:
*A laptop (I use my MacBook Pro)
*Iphone (Or Droid)
*This App for your phone
*The EOS utility specific to your camera. Go here to download.
*Tripod ( Optional)
*A wireless remote. (Optional) I have this one.
I know. It's a lot. But where there's a will there's a way. Basically, instead of just connecting my phone directly to my camera, I connect my computer to my camera and then connect my phone to my computer.
Download the EOS Utility App
Connect your camera to your computer. Open the app if it doesn't automatically and select "Camera settings/Remote shooting"
Select "Live View Shoot..."
Once you are here, you will see on your computer what your camera is seeing. Now it's time to set up your phone to remotely control your comptuer.
Go to “System Preferences” – “Sharing” – Select (and enable) “Screen Sharing”
Make sure that under “Allow access for” you either select “All users“, or have the user you want to connect with, enabled.
Also, make sure you don’t set a VNC password under “Computer Settings” (It’s not needed for Remoter!)
In Remoter’s Session Editor, use your Mac username for the “VNC Username” and your Mac’s password for the “VNC Password”
Download the Remoter VNC App
MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE SAME WIFI AS YOUR COMPUTER
Click the plus at the top
Select your computer and log in! You can now control your computer/camera remotely from your phone!
Before I plug my camera in, I put it on 2 second timer. This is so I can use the wireless remote to take the picture and drop the phone and remote if I don't want it in the pic.
